LAGE EGAL is thrilled to announce its participation in the seventh edition of paper positions Berlin, where it will present an exciting selection of watercolour and ink drawings on paper by two exceptional artists, MARIANNA IGNATAKI and KLAUS KILLISCH. The art fair is dedicated to showcasing the versatility and potential of paper as a medium, and the event will take place in the unique and stunning building of the Deutsche Telekom Hauptstadtrepraesentanz.

The Greek artist, MARIANNA IGNATAKI, has built an impressive reputation with her intricate and captivating drawings, paintings, and textile sculptures. Her works often feature surreal portraits with Rococo-inspired compositions, and a strong sense of their own unique mythology. IGNATAKI’s protagonists are typically witches, animals, or hybrids, through which she creates a new world of subtle surrealism, erotic desire, grotesque, and the absurd. The ambiguity between dark and light, dreams and reality, and irony and humour, is what makes her works so distinctive. IGNATAKI’s masterful use of watercolour, pigment, and graphite creates a unique blend that reveals a story within itself, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in her captivating and imaginative world.

Her works will be showcased alongside black-and-white ink drawings by German artist, KLAUS KILLISCH. For the fair, LAGE EGAL has selected a series of KILLISCH’s older works, created in the period between 1987—1989, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The artist incorporates the human figure, a common element in his work, into freely formed shapes and lines. The roughness of the strokes creates a sense of punk energy on paper, mirroring the spirit of the time. KILLISCH aspires to create a free expression of a figurative language, which is evident in his works. At the same time, his drawings represent a period of revolt and transformation, not only as a representation but also as a translation of a defining era. Through his works, KILLISCH captures the essence of the time period, which is remembered but also reshaped through his artistic expression.

In summary, LAGE EGAL’s participation in paper positions Berlin will bring together two exceptional artists who use paper as a medium to create unique and captivating works. IGNATAKI’s watercolour drawings and KILLISCH’s ink drawings showcase their individual styles, yet complement each other, bringing a sense of depth and complexity to the exhibition. The event will take place in the unique Deutsche Telekom Hauptstadtrepraesentanz building, creating an immersive and memorable experience for visitors.

MARIANNA IGNATAKI was born in 1977 in Thessaloniki, Greece. She studied Architecture at the Technische Universität in Vienna, Austria and Visual Arts at the School of Fine Arts of Saint-Etienne, France. Between 2010-2017 she was based in Beijing, China. Her work has been presented internationally in solo and group exhibitions including at Reiter galleries, Berlin (2022), Minuseins, Vienna (2022), Momus Museums, Thessaloniki (2022), Contemporary Art Museum of Crete and Technopolis Museum, Athens (2022), Bouboulina Museum, Spetses (2021), Bark Berlin gallery (2021), Vincenz Sala gallery, Berlin (2020), CAN Christina Androulidaki gallery, Athens (2019), Benaki Museum, Athens (2019) among others. IGNATAKI lives and works between Berlin, Germany and Greece.

KLAUS KILLISCH was born in 1959 in Wurzen, former East-Germany. He studied painting at the Art Academy in East-Berlin from 1981-1986. His work has been represented in many exhibitions of German Art including the Biennale in Venice, Sezon Museum of Art in Tokyo, Folkwang Museum in Essen, New National Gallery in Berlin, Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst, Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig. Many private as well as public collections have acquired his work including Berlinische Galerie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Neue Nationalgalerie, Ostdeutscher Sparkassenverband, Stiftung Stadtmuseum, Stiftung KUNSTFORUM der Berliner Volksbank, Kupferstichkabinett, Deutsche Bank Leipzig, Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung Potsdam among others. Killisch Killisch lives in Berlin.
