“I photograph a lot of images that I can imagine using as a model for painting. Often the motif is too far away or taken too hastily, or it is too dark or too light, so that I have to paint what really interests me first. The initial photographic “mistakes” then play a role and take on a dominant and independent role. Other images and drawings are like self-citations or self-copies.  When I was in quarantine and met my colleagues and students mainly on the screen, I crossed paths with TOTO. The dog was a regular guest at my colleague Thomas’s house and would appear in the picture when Thomas was elsewhere or when I could recognise him somewhere on the sidelines. Because of its fuzzy and imprecise appearance, the animal itself already looked blurred in the often disturbed image with bad connections in which we were working.  In order to choose exactly the right colours for the copy of my felt-tip drawing of a lady in a red swimming costume paddling on a red board and a blue sea that I had seen from a distance, I quickly wrote down on a large piece of paper all the felt-tip colours used in the drawing. It was only later that I realised that every crack shape was also a kind of TOTO.”
