The Beckettian maxim “Fail again. Try again. Fail better” is widely known. In our contemporary society it has become, for many, a kind of mantra that ambitiously and simultaneously comforts and encourages. The truth, independent of our will or effort, is that we are doomed and blessed with failure – doomed because we cannot escape it, and blessed precisely because of that. Failure is one of our most unifying human experiences, and it is one that forces us to start over. Is not pleasant, but it opens possibilities. The (self) notion of failure shouldn’t be mistaken with quitting or giving up. Contrary to the showing of a white flag as a sign of capitulation among fighting parties, accepting a failure must be, and frequently is, only a way to move forward to better solutions, moments, strategies… to deal with others, but mostly and above all, to deal with ourselves.
