An orchid mimics the pollinator it seeks to attract. In a similar gesture, Obbe’s work manipulates human bodily attributes to draw in the viewer. His practice explores the transformation of mental states into physical form. Rooted in a sense of alienation, the sculptures embody a dissatisfaction with the impact of digital commerce on both mind and body. By appropriating contemporary commercial techniques and applying nostalgic, seductive colour palettes, Obbe creates an appealing surface: an inviting skin; for his mental embodiments. Within this body of work lies a compelling duality; the emotionally expressive dissociated core encased in a commercially attractive shell. This contradiction serves as a metaphor for the contemporary condition humaine.
