Francesca Comune

Born 1997 in Naples, Italy

Francesca Comune is an Italian artist born in Naples in 1997 and currently based in Brussels. After working in the fashion industry in Milan, she began studying photography at ARBA-ESA (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels) in 2018, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Visual and Spatial Arts in 2023. She currently teaches in the Photography Department at ARBA-ESA in Brussels (BE) and at the WERKSTATT Institute in Berlin (DE).

Her practice unfolds across photography, installation, sculpture, and writing, through situated research methodologies that investigate the relationships between images, space, and systems of representation. She approaches images and spaces as constructed fields shaped by economic, social, and symbolic forces, with a particular interest in how structures of production, circulation, organization, and standardization shape the territories we inhabit, as well as the forms through which we perceive them.

Her process often begins with observation and collection: architectures, infrastructures, objects, signs, fragments, and encountered situations become points of departure for broader investigations. Photography functions as an entry point into these systems, while progressively extending toward objects and space. Rather than considering the image as autonomous, Comune examines the material and spatial conditions in which it exists: formats, supports, scales, display systems, architectures, and the position of the viewing body.

Working from pre-existing structures, she displaces, assembles, and reconfigures images, objects, and materials in order to alter the relationships that initially define them. She is particularly interested in the moment when an element ceases to fulfil its assigned function: when a support becomes an image, an image becomes a structure, or a system intended to organize begins to produce instability.

The dispositif therefore occupies a central position in her practice, referring both to the material construction of her installations and to the less visible systems that condition how we look, organize, and attribute value. Her different projects operate as chapters within an ongoing investigation into the structures that organize images, spaces, and their uses, and into the possibility of intervening within existing systems without simply reproducing them.
