GHOST ECHOES brings together the work of artists Janine Eggert, Stefan Alber, Sibylle Jazra and Rutger de Vries. The exhibition reflects on the echoes that arise from bringing together different materials or by blending and experimenting with surfaces, shapes and colour. Often working with industrial materials and techniques, the artists in their own way poetically and aesthetically play with the traces the works leave behind. Either through the juxtaposition of different material, the questioning of social contexts or sculptural transformations. The visual echoes that emerge from these traces inhabit both processual and material resonances, which eventually extend beyond the surface of the object.
In his pictures, objects and installations STEFAN ALBER deals with the complexity of the relationships and boundaries of photography, painting, sculpture and architecture. Starting from a space, an object or a situation Alber develops specific questions with which he question processes, production techniques, habits of seeing or social contexts. In doing so, he experiments with the effectiveness of materials and surfaces, bends, folds or combines them, like a modular system, with modules from found and everyday objects. Many of his works are based on models, cite art history or social events. The search of site-specific circumstances plays an overlapping role.
In her large material collages, SIBYLLE JAZRA creates subtle allusions that occasionally become concrete without revealing their innermost. Rather, they referentially bend in many directions and, through fragments of quotations, form a new pattern of meaning that sometimes appears humorously, sometimes poetically. What the mix of materials achieves through the juxtaposition of the different materials, is also shown in Jazra’s gesticulating metal works through a purist reduction of surface, material and color. Using a variety of media including sculpture, installation, painting, and collage, Jazra deconstructs recurring elements into a personal narrative structure. The artist learned her craft at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where she studied Autonomous Sculpture. In 2019, she received a scholarship from the Kulturwerk der VG Bild Kunst Bonn and published her monograph “Schickeria Glitterati” with Kerber Verlag in 2020.
Janine Eggert is an artist who creates sculptures and installations, involving a wide range of industrial materials and industrial techniques. Her recent projects engage with the ornamental qualities of industrially manufactured goods and the technological sublime. Her work has been presented in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunstverein Wilhelmshöhe Ettlingen and Kunsthaus Hamburg and included large-scale, site-specific installations, sculptures, videos and screen prints. In addition to her work as a visual artist, she founded the exhibition space Lady Fitness in 2013 and curated et al sculpture focused and site-specific exhibitions such as “Arcadia Unbound” at the Funkhaus Berlin in 2015. Janine works artistically as an individual as well as in various permanent or temporary groupings. Since 2005 she has been working together with Philipp Ricklefs. Their collaborative art practice questions in large-scale installations and sculptural transformations the technological perfection in their multiform manifestations.
The expansive painting installations of RUTGER DE VRIES diverge in both geometric visual language and more organic, fanning painterly surfaces that draw upon the dynamics of seemingly contradictory actions of expression and concealment. He has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions including Re:Search:Gallery (NP3), Groningen; De Voorkamer, Amsterdam; De Cacaofabriek, Helmond; Mini Galerie, Rotterdam; N&C Showrooms, London, among others.
