We are delighted to present COULD IT BE THAT.., an exhibition within an exhibition curated as part of the ZWART HUIS gallery takeover for the next six months. This parallel event highlights our unique collaboration with the Belgian gallery, bringing together one artist from each gallery, STEFAN PETERS (Brussels) and TOM FRÜCHTL (Berlin), in a captivating exploration of illusion in painting.
In an era saturated with digital imagery and virtual realities, both artists revisit and reinvent traditional trompe-l’œil techniques with contemporary sensibility. Stefan Peters constructs dreamlike landscapes — vast, atmospheric vistas that feel at once intimately personal and eerily familiar. Tom Früchtl challenges the very materiality of paint itself, creating surfaces that appear scratched, weathered or damaged, only to reveal themselves as meticulously crafted illusions upon closer inspection.
The exhibition’s title, borrowed from Imagination’s hit song Just an Illusion, perfectly encapsulates this artistic inquiry: what if nothing is as it seems? By juxtaposing Peters’ and Früchtl’s distinct approaches, COULD IT BE THAT.. offers viewers an immersive experience where every brushstroke invites doubt and wonder. This is painting that doesn’t just represent, but actively questions the nature of perception.
